Michael John Kelly: NOTHING
Wilding Cran Gallery is pleased to present NOTHING, a new body of work by Los Angeles based artist, Michael John Kelly.
Kelly works between physical and digital processes, exploring objecthood within abstraction. Surfaces built with broad brushstrokes are fragmented and reassembled through digital collage, giving rise to imagined forms with distinct presence. Combining traditional painting with digital tools, he traces the sublime within an increasingly chaotic world. The four works in NOTHING are oil, acrylic and pigment print collage on canvas, the digital process folded back into a physical painting.
His work draws from science fiction, painting history, and the post punk wall of sound, situating abstraction within a post human visual landscape.
Michael John Kelly (b. 1975, Provo, Utah) received his MFA in Painting from the University of California, Los Angeles. Residencies in Berlin and Istanbul have shaped his hybrid approach. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Basel, London, Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Istanbul.
