Austin Irving : Cornered

3 June - 21 July 2018
Overview

CORNERED by Austin Irving is a series of photographs that call our attention to the spaces we inhabit. Void of cultural signifiers, belonging to no specific place or location, a universality of line and form reoccurs from image to image, offering a deeper assessment of the formal elements that make up the rooms we occupy. Often more like paintings than photographic prints, the simplicity of these compositions is both abstract and up-lifting. Irving subtly crops each image in such a way that the viewer is lifted out of the domestic mundanity suggested by a mere ‘room’, into a transcendent, Escher-esque realm with no sense of direction or scale.

Photographed on location in the U.S., Canada and India, these images are maps of both geometric and conceptual possibilities, reminding us that seeing is an unstable process, as dependent on the brain as on the eye.

This is Austin’s second solo exhibition at Wilding Cran Gallery.
